From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release

However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.

Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.

“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
